Scholarships, An Investment in our Industry's Future
Today's youth are tomorrow's workers; an old adage, but none-the-less
a true one. The Scholarship Committee, headed by Charlie Benjamin, takes
this adage to heart and helps get young men and women off to a good start. The
Scholarship Committee decides who among the many applicants receives scholarships
and how much each applicant receives.
The young men and women have to 'earn' their scholarships. They start
by completing an application which is perused by each committee member.
Once an application is accepted, the young men and women are then put
thru the paces...they must pass an interview whereby the interviewers
ask such questions as 'what is integrity?''; how do you define your work
ethic?'; define your value system as it relates to your everyday life?'.
Not easy questions for any one to answer. Each question is designed to
make the young person think...to turn inward and honestly answer.
From the most recent pool of applicants, the Scholarship Committee sent
a select few invitations to applicants for interviews. Each invitation
required a RSVP. Each was instructed to wear 'interview' clothes and bring
a portfolio of work with them. The actual interviews took place one Saturday
morning back in June of this year. As the applicants came in, you could
smell the anxiety among them. The air practically sizzled with excitement.
Each applicant was dressed to the nines.
As the time for the first interview approached, the air buzzed with a
frenzy of anticipation. The interviews took place on June 6th, 2009 at
the Printing & Graphics Association MidAtlantic who kindly volunteered
their boardroom for interviews. The Scholarship Committee asks the questions.
Each applicant was required to answer these questions directly and honestly,
as well as, present their portfolio which included Letters of Recommendation,
official transcripts and letters of acceptance from their selected institutions
of higher learning.
Based on all the above, scholarships were awarded to six finalists.
